Snailbeach mine at the peak of production during the 19th century was reputed to be extracting the largest volume of lead per acre in Europe. Shropshire Caving and Mining Club will lead us on an underground SRT trip to 40 Yard from Perkins Level – 3-4 relatively short pitchs (20m max), mostly sloping with a few deviations. No complicated rebelays. Possibility of a scenic route back up by slightly more exposed route . Can return by original route too.
Once on 40 Yard chance to walk out to Chapel shaft inset and out towards Black Tom. Back on Perkins can look at various stopes, plus some short SRT routes in top stope.
Plenty of photo opportunities. Can stay dry with wellies, occasionally just over.
