The Duddon Valley has an interesting collection of seldom visited Slate & Metal mines. This meet will take a look at a selection of these workings, the choice will depend on the weather conditions on the day. But Common Wood will be on the itinerary, which is a quite extensive slate quarry which has recently been reopened by Tracey & Carl. Meet at the car park by the Duddon Iron Furnace (just 150 yards north-west of Duddon Bridge A595) ready for a 10am start. Grid Ref SD 197 882.
Please note, as with all slate quarries, there is a lot of slippy, loose and unstable rock involved. Some levels involve steep slopes, deep water and/or tight squeezes to access. Great care is needed to navigate such workings.
