The Newland Furnace Trust
The Newland Furnace Trust developed from concerned members of CATMHS and CIHS meeting informally from 1988 to preserve the remains of the historic charcoal blast furnace at Newland. We became a formal trust and charity in 1992 The roofs were repaired with the aid of substantial grants from English Heritage but repairs to the stonework were carried out by volunteers.
Volunteers are still needed to maintain the furnace, to guide visitors and to research the history of the furnace. Our current project is to excavate the floor, with properly qualified supervision, to improve access and to display the remains of the blowing system.
We are open to visitors on Heritage open days and by arrangement. To join us as a volunteer or to arrange a tour please contact the secretary, David Robson, ddcrobson@googlemail.com or join us at the furnace on the last Saturday afternoon of any month.
